100 Days Proposal

I would like to
show how over a long period of time only a few memories remain
untainted. To convey this I would shred a copy of every image on my
blog, in a paper shredder, to make a canvas on which i would display
the more memorial images. I want to collage the shreds of images
either by weaving them or randomly pasting the strips together. I
would make a square out of the shreds, no bigger than 3 feet by 3
feet. I would like this piece to hang from the ceiling vertically
like a sheet so that it can move with the other elements in the room.
I would not hang it loosely with fishing line so that it seems more
fragile and delicate, like memories can become.
I like this idea, it's very clear what you're trying to convey through this arrangement. Might I suggest adding in the element of paint? Dripping paint or glue would help convey the idea of memories fading in you decide to paste the pieces of photo together, and frayed, loose string if you decide to weaving them together would also convey this. Just a suggestion.
ReplyDeleteadding another element to convey memories fading sounds great. but i dont know if i would add more elements or just alter the photos in another way, besides the strips
DeleteMaybe if you cut slits in the strips and combine them that way, making them look like they meld, that could help convey the blending of memories.

DeleteI like your idea , I can clearly understand what you are trying to convey with your memory. I may suggest that maybe instead of laying them flat in a square shape overlap or overlay them so it pops out like a 3D element to your piece , just a suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI think your idea is really neat, and very time consuming. Make sure you shred with a shredder that shreds in only stright lines. The new ones shred vertically and horizontally. And make sure the paper is stright because it un-aligns easily. What do you mean by memories are fragile and delicate?
ReplyDeletei mean that some things are easily forgotten or details are lost over time, how we have to try to piece things back together as things fade together
DeleteOoooh I gottcha! How Will it be hung? (metal circular things, string, ect...) And will that as well be a very fragile object?
DeleteYou might want to add to the idea of fragility by maybe crumpling or using water to distort the images. This might add to the feeling of fragility.
ReplyDeleteWill you be displaying the images chronologically? What kind of paper will you be using? Will you be using a frame around it to hold all the images together? If not, how will you attach them? Will you be able to view it from one side or will you get a 3D effect and be able to walk around it (since you mentioned hanging it)?
ReplyDeleteSince you plan on shredding every image, how will you make the more memorable photos stand out against the rest? I like the idea of your piece being hung from the ceiling as that makes a canvas, usually seen as something flat, slightly more three-dimensional.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good idea!
ReplyDeleteif you want to show fragility how are you going to secure the weaved image fragments? small stitches could secure structural points but to show ultimate fragility other than the sections you need to hand the piece from) you might be able to just have the weave bear it's own weight, it would be super fragile though, so fragile that while its hung, it might slowly fall apart. which would be a cool effect.......
also i would recommend using different kind of paper and saturation levels for different emphasis on images.
Have fun!
I think this is a really cool idea. Shredding it and weaving it together would make it really fragile, which is what you are going for, but how tight are you going to weave it together? If you weave it together tightly, I don't think it would be as fragile. Also, are images going to be printed on both sides so you can walk around it and experience it from all angles, or just on one side?
ReplyDeleteReally cool idea joe! weaving in the end can be appealing to the eye if you do it right, but it is time consuming. With the shredding and weaving you could make different kinds of weaving patterns and layer them on top of each other. i think the build up of each layer will look really cool because, then there would be texture. Even though the build up of layers would make the canvas sturdy and convey strength, the sense of fragility is still there because weaving takes time and patience.
ReplyDeleteIt would be really cool if you could use broad cloth to put your images on (I have some left over if you want it). Also, you said something during class about leaving some images unharmed and putting them on top? Maybe you could shred a part of the images and not all? representing how some of the memory is there and other parts aren't?
ReplyDeleteIt would be cool if you could show other methods of memories changing, like burning the paper, or scratching the image, etc. I think it might help show how there are more than one way that memories can be tainted.
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea, Joe. I think it would turn out better if it was weaved together though, not "randomly pasted." It would add another element of how sometimes people intertwine their memories.
